Lancetilla

Origin and History:

  • The Lancetilla mango originated in Lancetilla, Honduras, at the Lancetilla Botanical Garden.
  • It’s believed to be a cross between the Saigon and Mulgoba mango varieties, developed by Wilson Popenoe.
  • It was introduced to the United States through South Florida and gained popularity after being showcased at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s mango festival in 2001.

Fruit Characteristics:

  • Size: Large to very large, typically weighing 2-5 pounds, with some reaching even larger sizes.
  • Shape: Oblong or oval-shaped, flattened.
  • Skin: Greenish-yellow with a red blush at maturity.
  • Flesh: Firm, fiberless, and a lemon-yellow color.
  • Flavor: Described as intensely sweet and aromatic with a classic Indian mango flavor.

Tree Characteristics:

  • Size: Medium to large tree, potentially reaching 15-25 feet tall.
  • Growth Habit: Vigorous grower.
  • Production: Considered a good producer, but can be prone to fruit drop, particularly when young.
  • Disease Resistance: Generally considered to have good disease resistance.

Season:

  • Late-season mango, typically ripening from July to September in Florida.

Overall Impression:

The Lancetilla mango is known for its impressively large fruit size and sweet, fiberless flesh. It’s a good option for those who want a large mango and have the space for a medium to large tree. However, it’s important to be aware of its tendency to drop fruit and its susceptibility to splitting on the tree.
