Nam Doc Mai

  • Origin: Nam Doc Mai #4 is a cultivar of the original Nam Doc Mai mango, originating from Thailand. It arose from seed planting of the original Nam Doc Mai.
  • Tree Characteristics:
    • It is a compact and precocious (early-bearing) tree.
    • It tends to be smaller than other Nam Doc Mai varieties. Some sources describe it as semi-dwarf, reaching 8-10 feet with pruning, making it suitable for containers. Other sources say it can grow to 15-20 feet.
    • It has good anthracnose resistance in its flowers and foliage, but the fruit is susceptible to post-harvest anthracnose and the flowers are prone to powdery mildew. It also appears moderately prone to bacterial black spot.
  • Fruit Characteristics:
    • The fruit is sigmoid-oblong (elongated with a curve) and has a tapering nose.
    • It turns a dull greenish-yellow when ripe.
    • The flesh is pale yellow, silky smooth, and completely fiberless.
    • It has a strong floral and honey flavor, lacking any tartness.
    • The seed is long, thin, and polyembryonic (contains multiple embryos).
  • Season: It’s an early-to-midseason mango, typically ripening from June to July in South Florida.
  • Other:
    • The fruit is more prone to splitting open on the tree compared to other Nam Doc Mai types.
    • It fruits well in humid climates but can be susceptible to rot fungi.

In summary, Nam Doc Mai #4 is a popular cultivar of the original Nam Doc Mai, known for its compact size, precocious bearing, excellent sweet and floral flavor, and fiberless flesh. However, it is important to note that it is more susceptible to fruit splitting, post-harvest anthracnose, powdery mildew, and bacterial black spot than other Nam Doc Mai types.
