Origin and History:

  • The Kent mango originated in Coconut Grove, Florida, and was named after Leith Dunlop Kent, a mango enthusiast who first grew the variety in 1933.
  • It’s believed to be a seedling of the Brooks mango, though some sources suggest a Haden parentage as well.
  • The variety was recognized for its excellent flavor and production characteristics, quickly becoming popular in Florida and beyond. 

Fruit Characteristics:

  • Size: Medium to large, typically ranging from 1 to 2 pounds.
  • Shape: Oval to round.
  • Skin: Greenish-yellow with a red blush, especially on the sun-exposed side.
  • Flesh: Fiberless, firm, juicy, and deep yellow to orange-yellow.
  • Flavor: Sweet and aromatic, with a rich, classic mango flavor and hints of peach. 

Tree Characteristics:

  • Size: Large and vigorous, with a dense, upright canopy.
  • Production: Known for heavy and consistent fruit production.
  • Disease Resistance: The fruit are generally considered disease resistant, although young trees can be susceptible to disease.
  • Cold Hardiness: Mature trees can tolerate temperatures as low as 28°F with some leaf damage, but young trees need protection from frost. 

Season:

  • Late-season mango, typically ripening from July to September in Florida.
