• Dominant Variety: The Gros Michel was the primary export banana for decades, shaping the global banana trade.
• Panama Disease: In the mid-20th century, a devastating fungal disease called Panama disease (Fusarium wilt) wiped out vast plantations of Gros Michel bananas.
• Replacement by Cavendish: Due to the Gros Michel’s susceptibility to Panama disease, it was largely replaced by the Cavendish banana, which was resistant to the disease.
